Abbreviations

Many regular e-mail users have begun using specialized abbreviations, even in their business communications..  You certainly don't have to utilize these yourself (in fact, in business related mail, it would be wise not to unless you are certain the recipient is familiar with the abbreviations), but you may receive e-mail that includes them.

Don't worry about memorizing these, just get the general concept. This is only a VERY small sampling of common abbreviations.  The same abbreviations are used in chat - to see a more extensive list, please visit the Chat 101 site .

Brackets < > are often used to indicate actions or facial expressions (for example: <shrug>)

You will see these abbreviations in both small case and capital letters.  There are many more used currently and being introduced all the time, and be careful... you'll may start using these abbreviations in your "regular" correspondence and writing!
