You may have no control over this - your internet connection may be dropped because of phone line interference, or the ISP will drop the
connection if you've been "idle" for a while.
Here are some settings you DO have control over:
- If using Outlook Express, open the program, use the menu bar to go to "Tools", then from the drop down, select "Options", which opens
a dialog box. Click on the "Connection" tab and make sure the "Hang up after sending and receiving" is NOT checked.
- Make sure your modem is not set to auto disconnect:
- Windows 98: Open My Computer from your desktop, then open the 'Network and Dialup Connections' folder.
Look for the name of your internet connection, and RIGHT click on it - choose Properties. On the General tab, there is a button for the modem that says "Configure". Click it, then choose the Connection tab. Make sure that there is NO checkmark on the 'if idle so many minutes, hang up' option.
- Windows 2000: From your start button in 'Settings', select 'Network and Dialup Connections'. Look for the name of your
internet connection, RIGHT click on the item, and choose Properties, which opens a dialog box. Click on the 'Options' tab, then in the 'Redialing Options', use the drop down to set the 'Idle time before hanging up' to never.
