Spyware is software that's installed on your computer that either keeps track of what websites you visit, or can also keep track of your
keystrokes.
Most spyware is installed with or without your knowledge when you install free software from the Internet. One of the most notorious
is "Gator", freeware that comes packaged with a bunch of other freeware. Most file sharing (but not all) software seems to contain spyware, as well as many of the "shopping aid" software.
Two awful things about spyware that comes with freeware - it is an invasion of privacy AND it slows down your computer a lot!
If your computer seems terribly slow and you just installed some freeware, you very likely have some spyware operating.
The other kind of spyware is the stuff that's sold primarily to households that keeps track of what's typed onto the computer system.
For example - a parent might install spyware to check on what the kids are doing; a kid might install spyware to discover passwords; a suspicious person might install spyware just because.
Solutions? Be very, very careful when installing freeware. No matter how "cool" it looks.
