Typical Web Site Structure & Navigation

Web sites are built like corporate flow chartsWeb sites are built like corporate flow charts. A diagram of a very simple web site is shown.

The navigation bar (buttons or links to other pages in the web site) are usually located on the left, top, and/or bottom of a web page.

Navigation Bar ExampleThis is how the navigation bar might look on the Home Page of the sample web site.

To get to the Parent 1 Page, you’d click on that button or link. When you get to that page, the navigation bar might change on the Parent 1 Page to look something like the buttons shown to the right.

You might see the colors of the buttons have changed - the button of the section you are visiting is now different than the others. This helps you know “where you are” in a web site.  Note:  not all navigation bars have this feature.
